Become A Writer

become a writerIf becoming a writer is your passion and something you want to aim for as a goal then you are in for an interesting career because being a writer is a fantastic job. Some people know that they want to become a writer early in childhood when they act as the go-to storyteller for all the other kids on the block.

Other people realize that they enjoy writing only after they take a mandatory composition class in high school or college. For others, it can be any number of things that spurns an interest in writing that prompts them to pursue a career in becoming a writer.

Make no mistake about it; becoming a writer can be a great career to aim for. It isn't for everyone though, and most writers have to spend quite some time paying their dues before making any substantial money. So don't quit your day job just yet, but get ready to roll up your sleeves and figure out if you have the gumption needed to soon become a professional writer.

Do you engage people with your writing? It's okay if you don't have any real experience other than engaging people with your writing. You don't necessarily need to have a history of writing for a school newspaper or composing online content for websites to become a writer as long as you have a real talent for writing.

Although it is true that you are going to have to pay your dues and probably take a series of non-paying or low-paying jobs to build up your résumé and reputation as a writer, if you have a great talent then it shouldn't be long before higher paying jobs are heading your way. Don't let a lack of concrete experience stop you from pursuing your dream of developing into a professional writer.

To build up your confidence to become a writer you might want to educate yourself and take a writers course and go to some writer’s workshops. It is also a good idea to join a writers group. Libraries, schools, book stores, and coffee shops are great places to look when you decide the time has come to join a writers group. A writers group can be a great way to not only make some new friends who share the same professional interests as you, but also to start networking with other writers and learn about new skills and the tricks of the trade on how to become a writer.

After all, you can read plenty of books about becoming a writer, but sometimes the very best advice comes from other local writers who were once in similar situations to you. Don't allow yourself to feel intimidated by the occupational expertise of the other writers in the group. They wouldn't have joined a local writing group if they weren't willing to chat it up with beginning writers.

Consider the time you spend socializing with the other writers in the group as valuable time educating yourself more about becoming a professional writer. Soak up any knowledge the other writers are willing to impart to you. Of course, don't get so wrapped up in learning things that you don't allow yourself to have a really good time with all your new writing friends.
